Meet Ashley OBryan of Fluff & Boots

Nashville has no shortage of creative entrepreneurs, but Ashley OBryan comes with a team of whiskered sidekicks. She’s an animal advocate and the founder of Fluff & Boots, a cat-loving lifestyle brand with heart. Inspired by her time in Cyprus (the unofficial feline capital of the world), Ashley launched a company that blends ethical products with a bigger mission: caring for stray and feral cats while challenging the pet industry to do better.

Where does your story start? Was your childhood filled with cats?

I actually grew up with dogs in my immediate household, but animals have always been a constant in my life. My maternal grandmother was a devoted animal lover who rescued several dogs and cats over the years, and watching her care for them deeply shaped my sense of compassion and responsibility.

Professionally, I began my career at a double-bottom-line company where success was measured by both profit and impact. That experience gave me the framework to build something values-driven. When I founded Fluff & Boots, it felt like a natural intersection of those influences, pairing childhood empathy with purpose-led business. It became my way of building something that honors the role animals truly play in our lives.

What inspired you to launch Fluff & Boots? When did it go from an interesting idea to “I have to do this”?

Fluff & Boots was born out of both love and frustration. As a pet parent, I was constantly disappointed by what was available on the market. So many products are mass-produced, poorly made, disposable, and usually made with toxic textile dyes. It feels like the larger pet industry hasn’t caught up with how deeply we care about our animals.

The turning point was realizing that if I wanted better options, I had to create them. It stopped being a “someone should do this” idea and became a very clear “I have to do this” moment. I didn’t just want more aesthetically pleasing products; I wanted safer materials, thoughtful design, and long-lasting pieces that felt elevated enough to live beautifully in your home.

Fluff & Boots became my way of raising the standard, and, at the same time, structuring the business in a way that makes a positive impact on feline welfare beyond our own homes.

For those just discovering it, how would you describe Fluff & Boots and what you offer?

Fluff & Boots is a cat-centric lifestyle brand for people who see their pets as family. We create elevated essentials that are safe, durable, and thoughtfully designed to live beautifully in any home. Too often, cats and their owners are an afterthought in the larger pet industry, with products that are disposable, poorly made, or unattractive.

Fluff & Boots fills that gap by offering pieces that prioritize your cat’s well-being while reflecting the care and intention you bring to your home.

Beyond our products, Fluff & Boots is a welcoming community of purr-parents and cat lovers who truly “give a fluff” about felines. It’s a space to share ideas, celebrate the joy cats bring, and support one another in raising happy, healthy pets while advocating for cats in need.

Our community reflects the belief that caring for cats is both personal and shared, and it connects people as much as it honors the felines at the heart of it all.

You’ve lived everywhere from the Midwest to New York to Cyprus. Was there a specific moment or place that pushed you from compassion into action?

Living in Cyprus opened my eyes to the scale of need that often goes unseen. Seeing so many stray and feral cat colonies up close as part of daily life, and witnessing most of them barely surviving, shifted something in me. Compassion alone and the occasional donation didn’t feel sufficient anymore.

I remember thinking that if I cared this much, I needed to find a way to translate that care into something tangible and lasting. That’s really where the idea was planted that advocacy could take many forms, including building a business that supports cats on a broader scale.

You’re intentional about ethical sourcing and advocacy. Why was it important for that to be foundational to the business?

I’ve always believed how you make something is just as important as what you make. For me, ethical sourcing and advocacy aren’t just “nice-to-haves,” they’re non-negotiables. For Fluff & Boots, it was essential from day one to align our products and practices with our values, from the materials we choose to the partners we work with.

This ensures every item we create honors the pets who will use it, the people who make it, and the wider community of cats who rely on us to advocate for them.

At the end of the day, this brand was sparked by your own rescue cats. How have Fluff, Boots, and the rest of your crew shaped the way you lead?

Their curiosity, energy, affection, and unique personalities remind me leadership is just as much about observation and responsiveness as it is about vision. Their needs and behaviors directly shape our product development, ensuring everything we create truly serves cats and the people who love them.

At its core, Fluff & Boots is about creating a space where both humans and cats feel seen, safe, and valued, and where every choice is guided by the real lives and experiences of the cats who share our homes.

When you’re not working or wrangling your feline board of directors, where can we find you?

Probably near water. A pool, the sea, the spa. Water has this grounding, steady rhythm that clears my mind and brings me back to center. It’s where I think best and often where my most creative ideas surface.

What’s one thing people would be surprised to learn about you?

I’m a trivia nerd and love a good bar trivia night, especially when it’s themed around a TV show or movie. I have a pretty solid memory and attention to detail, so if I see or hear something a few times, it sticks. When I was living in NYC during the height of Game of Thrones, my sister and I would hit the GoT-themed trivia nights, and we ended up winning hundreds, if not thousands, in bar tabs and gift cards!

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

“Lead with your why.” Trends change, opinions come from every direction, and opportunities can look tempting, but purpose is steady. For me, that means always coming back to why I started Fluff & Boots in the first place: cats deserve better, and so do the people who love them.

Sometimes it means choosing the longer road or passing on quick wins that do not align with your values, but building something with integrity and intention is always worth it in the end.

LIGHTNING ROUND

What’s the most memorable recent meal you’ve had in Nashville? Aba for the Hot Honey Halloumi and Mediterranean Mule cocktail. Halloumi is actually Cypriot, and given the time I spend there, I eat a lot of it. Aba has my favorite preparation, which is a bit funny considering it’s such a staple in Cyprus, yet I crave it the most in Nashville.

Faith, family, and friends notwithstanding, what three things can’t you live without? My cats (probably no surprise there!), a strong espresso, and a hot shower. Those three things can reset almost anything.

What’s on your nightstand? A Knead-it Pad. It’s within arm’s reach for when I’m woken up at all hours by paws and claws demanding attention. It’s part of my nightly routine now, along with accepting I don’t actually control the schedule in the house.
