Inter Miami’s Lionel Messi is set to make his debut in the MLS All-Star Game since joining Major League Soccer in summer 2023. The event will take place at Q2 Stadium on July 23, 2025.
Messi to Face Familiar Rivals in MLS All-Star Debut
The MLS All-Stars will compete against the Liga MX All-Stars for the fourth time in the event’s history. MLS currently leads the series with two wins to Liga MX’s one. This edition is especially notable as Messi will play alongside former FC Barcelona teammate Jordi Alba, while facing rivals from his La Liga days.
Messi will go up against Sergio Ramos and James Rodriguez, both former Real Madrid stars. Ramos now plays for CF Monterrey, and Rodriguez represents Club León.
Star-Studded Liga MX All-Star Roster Announced
The Liga MX squad features top talents including Ramos, Rodriguez, Alexis Vega, Marcel Ruiz, and Paulinho from reigning champions Toluca FC. Also included are former Real Betis midfielder Sergio Canales and 16-year-old Club Tijuana sensation Gilberto Mora.
Notable Absences from Liga MX Lineup
Despite the strong roster, several marquee signings will not participate. Pumas UNAM recently signed former Juventus and Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey, while Tigres UANL acquired Atletico Madrid’s Angel Correa. Pumas are reportedly finalizing a deal for former Real Madrid goalkeeper Keylor Navas, and Cruz Azul is close to signing striker Luka Jovic. None of these players are expected to feature in the All-Star Game.
Messi Among Captain Nominees for MLS All-Stars
Although Inter Miami’s Luis Suarez will not participate, the MLS squad includes notable players such as Hirving Lozano (San Diego), Denis Bouanga (LAFC), and Diego Luna (Real Salt Lake). Messi is nominated alongside Bouanga, Evander, and Brandon Vazquez for team captain. Fans can vote for the captain until 11:59 PM EST on July 11.
Messi in Red-Hot Form Ahead of All-Star Clash
Messi enters the All-Star Game in outstanding form, having scored five goals in his last two MLS matches. He netted twice and assisted once in Inter Miami’s 4-1 victory over CF Montreal, followed by another brace in a 2-1 win against the New England Revolution.
